Prosthodontics Graduate Programs

Graduate Programs

The Department of Prosthodontics provides undergraduate and graduate instruction, patient care, and conducts research covering the many disciplines making up the broad specialty of Prosthodontics. These disciplines include: fixed prosthodontics, removable prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthetics, and occlusion. The Department has affiliations with the Department of Otolaryngology and Hospital Dentistry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Department of Dentistry at the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City.

Advanced Training Program
The Department offers an advanced training program leading to a certificate in prosthodontics. The certificate program satisfies the formal training requirements for eligibility for the American Board of Prosthodontics examination, The program is fully a ccredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. The certificate program is 34 months in length with a new class beginning July 1st of each year.

Graduate Programs
Students may also elect a course of study leading to a Master of Science degree along with the advanced training program. The Master of Science degree, obtained through the Graduate College of the University of Iowa, requires the completion of an original research project, preparation and defense of a thesis and a comprehensive examination covering the specialty of prosthodontics. Due to these additional requirements, students may require more than the specified 34 months to complete both the clinical and M.S. degree. Courses of study leading to a Ph.D. are available through basic science departments or through interdisciplinary affiliations. Individuals pursuing a Ph.D. and an advanced training certificate should plan on a minimum of five to six years to complete both programs.

Program Strengths
The graduate and advanced training programs are designed to prepare dentists for the practice of prosthodontics with a strong background in dental research. The programs may be modified to fulfill individual interests, goals and desires while still meeting requirements for the certificate and M.S. or Ph.D. degrees. We believe that the major strength of our prosthodontic programs is the variety and depth of patient treatment experiences available to our students. Prosthodontic graduate students spend portions of their clinical time at the College of Dentistry, University Hospitals and Clinics, and the V.A. Medical Center. Through these three clinical facilities the student will treat a variety of complex prosthodontic patients including medically compromised patients, geriatric patients and patients requiring maxillofacial rehabilitation. The student will also have the opportunity to work closely with other disciplines within the dental and medical fields including: Endodontics, Otolaryngology, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Radiation Therapy, and Speech Pathology. Additional strengths include the faculty, research facilities, and technical support readily available through the Dows Institute for Dental Research to assist graduate students with their research.

Stipends
Stipends are available to prosthodontic graduate students. First year students receive $9,500 and second year students receive $10,500 and third year students receive $11,500. Stipends for advanced training and a course of study leading to a Ph.D. degree are available on a competitive basis through the Dentist-Scientist Program. The Dentist-Scientist Award, assuming satisfactory performance, continues for five years.
