Department of Operative Dentistry

Graduate Program

The Department of Operative Dentistry provides an important role in the College of Dentistry both in teaching the foundational concepts of restorative dentistry to the undergraduate dental students and in providing international leadership in dental research and advanced restorative technology with its collective faculty efforts and through its Graduate Program in Operative Dentistry.

Faculty: The Department of Operative Dentistry has eight full-time faculty, all of whom have advanced degrees in dentistry. These faculty are recognized for their teaching, research and clinical expertise. This is evident in the large number of articles published in leading dental journals and in the many continuing education courses given both nationally and internationally by the faculty. All faculty in the department are active in private practice, and many are involved with product testing and clinical research.

Research and Clinical Activities: The department has access to well-equipped facilities for involvement in many types of material testing by graduate students as well as by an increasing number of undergraduate students. Although the department has been involved in many areas of materials research in operative dentistry, it has been especially recognized for its leadership in the area of composite resins and its contribution to bonding technology over the past 20 years. It has been among the first departments in the nation to incorporate resin technology such as bonded cast appliances, posterior esthestic restorations, dentin bonding, and esthetic courses, into its undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

Goals: The Operative Dentistry Graduate Program has been designed to take advantage of the strengths of its faculty and facilities in providing graduate students the opportunity to reach several professional goals. The first of these is the development and refinement of skills in advanced operative dentistry techniques with special emphasis on esthetic dentistry. Graduate students will have the opportunity to learn to use the latest material and procedures in bonding technology and integrate them into a sound philosophy of esthetics. Second, the program provides the opportunity to gain experience in teaching and research in preparation for an academic career in Operative Dentistry. In addition, courses in education are available for the student as well as student teaching experience. Students develop a research protocol, implement the research and report the findings in the masters thesis. Finally, the program provides the opportunity for clinical case development and preparation for the student interested in board certification in Operative Dentistry.

Requirements: The graduate program requires a minimum of 52 semester hours of study which normally involves two years, including summers. Both a Master of Science Degree and a Certificate in Operative Dentistry will be awarded upon completion of the course of study. The program requires a research project and thesis. Although certain courses are required for graduation, graduate students have the opportunity to take course work in their area of special interest.

Currently, no stipends are available for graduate students accepted into the program, and all students must be able to financially support themselves for the time necessary to complete the program.

Application: Application to the graduate program is to be made to the Department of Operative Dentistry, but will be coordinated through the Graduate College of The University of Iowa. The deadline date for application is November 1 of the year prior to the anticipated date of enrollment. A maximum of three students will be accepted into the graduate program each year. Students will be notified of acceptance into the program by January 1.
