His research has focused on the innervation of teeth and the transmission of pain; the impact of fluoride and sealants on caries incidence; the prevention of intraoral trauma and dental emergencies; and the incidence of caries in underserved populations.
Recently, he has focused on the early caries process--assessing dental decay as a distinct pattern of disease--and then designing ways to prevent the disease and building those interventions into health networks. Dr. Johnsen is a frequent contributor to the scientific literature and has presented the results of his research to state and national organizations.
