EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Training programs for new generations of clinicians and scientists are an integral part of the Dows Institute, ranging from summer research experiences for high school students to postdoctoral fellowships. Dows faculty contribute to all graduate program
s associated with the clinical departments in the College of Dentistry.
High School and Predental Research Opportunities
High school science teachers and talented high school students considering careers in the biomedical sciences gain research experience in the laboratories of Dows faculty through the University of Iowa Secondary Student Science Training Program (SSTP) an
d the NIH-funded Minority High School Student Research Apprenticeship Program. University of Iowa undergraduate students registered for honors programs in science education also frequently acquire research experience in the laboratories of the Dows Insti
tute. Some five to ten students take advantage of these opportunities each year.
Predoctoral Students
Predoctoral research training programs in the Dows Institute contribute to development of a pool of outstanding students who, through an introduction to the scientific community along with practical laboratory experience, will be encouraged to consider c
areers as clinical scientists at an appropriate stage in their education.
Dental students enrolled at The University of Iowa may gain research experience through a variety of programs. The federally supported Short Term Research Training Program, funded at Iowa since 1984 and the collegiate Dows Student Research Award establi
shed in 1979 support student research projects. Under these programs, funded predoctoral student proposals, designed under the supervision of faculty mentors, provide a short term stipend for the student researcher and a small budget for supplies. The D
ental Research Assistant Program enables highly qualified freshman students to begin an extended research experience which will continue throughout their four years of dental school. Selection for this program usually occurs at the time of admission to t
he college. Student researchers in all three programs register for credit hours in 112:190, Dental Student Research Honors Program.
Dentist Scientist Program
As a five-year program of intensive preparation for a career in academic dentistry, the Dentist Scientist Program in the Dows Institute provides a broad base of knowledge in basic science combined with advanced clinical training. Funded by a grant from
the National Institute for Dental Research, the program at Iowa is one of eight institutional programs in the United States. The course of study, which leads to a Ph.D. degree and certification in a dental specialty, may be centered in an individual basi
c science department or organized as an interdisciplinary degree in which emphasis on one basic science area combines with components that cross departmental lines to involve the dental clinical disciplines. Students selecting the latter plan of study wi
ll enroll in the newly approved Ph.D. program in Oral Science.
Graduate Courses in the Dows Institute
The Dows Institute offers a series of graduate core courses. Taught by faculty from the Dows Institute and other departments in the College as well as from the College of Medicine, the courses provide a foundation of current knowledge in all areas of de
ntistry relevant to students who are pursuing master's degrees and
advanced clinical training in the dental specialties.
