Introduction

This database is designed to assist in the proper work-up of patients with undiagnosed chest masses. It is an outgrowth of the multidisciplinary approach to the care of lung cancer patients that is used at the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

The organization of the database is best seen in the diagram below. At the core of this project is a series of "virtual patients" taken from our experience in the Lung Cancer Clinic. Each patient was chosen to illustrate or reinforce a different aspect of lung cancer presentation, work-up or treatment. These cases link to specific discussions in the "first level", and are focused within individual disciplines such a Thoracic Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology and Radiology. These discussions are directed at those who are new to the subject or are general practitioners. These discussions, in turn, link to more specific or detailed information in the second level.

One may enter the database from the virtual patient list and link to specific information about a disease entity as required. Alternatively, the user can search for specific information at the outset and link to clinical examples later.

We believe that the multidisciplinary approach provides a more accurate picture of the disease process and its treatment. We hope that you enjoy using this database as much as we have enjoyed participating in its creation.
