The Doctor of Dental Science Program

Year 1 Basic sciences with introduction to clinical experiences.

Year 2 Continuation of basic sciences and technical courses, plus definitive clinical patient treatment.

Year 3 Students rotate through a series of clinical clerkships in each of the eight clinical disciplines.

Year 4 Delivery of comprehensive dental care under conditions approximating those in private practice. Seniors will also participate in extramural programs in locations throughout the Midwest.

Students entering without a degree may be able to earn a bachelor's degree by the transfer of course credits back to their undergraduate institution. Applicants must check with their advisors on the specific requirements for the baccalaureate degree.

For interested and qualified students, there are opportunities to participate in dental research with faculty.

COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID

Students eligible for dental school are considered for enrollment regardless of financial need. Students accepted for admission may apply for financial aid by completing and submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is sent to each incoming student. Every effort is made to fund students to the documented need level, depending upon the availability of federal and state funds.

DENTAL RESEARCH/TEACHING AWARDS

Scholarships are awarded each year to qualified entering dental students. The scholarships provide financial support for as many as four years if the student maintains an appropriate level of performance.

Dental research awards are based upon demonstrated academic excellence. The minimum review standards are 3.5 grade point average for all previous college course work and a 17 on the individual science portions of the DAT.

Applicants must submit all other regular application materials including an official transcript from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended, DAT scores, letters of recommendation, and participate in an on-campus interview. It is advisable to complete the application process as early as possible.

THE DIVERSITY PROGRAM

The University of Iowa has a long-established Educational Opportunity Program that provides financial and counseling services to students from economically and educationally disadvantaged or culturally different backgrounds and who have special educational or economic needs.

A summer enrichment program prior to matriculation into the College of Dentistry helps students acclimate to the college. An orientation to the basic sciences is also provided.

Educational Opportunity Program eligibility must be formally requested and documented by the applicant.
