Medical Museum

Order and Disorder: An Exploration of the Mind and the Brain
This exhibition describes the symptoms and current treatments of numerous mental illnesses and shows how malfunctions of normal biochemical processes affect the brain. Taking a historical perspective, the exhibition looks at mental institutions, particularly in Iowa, and displays the paraphernalia commonly used in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century asylums.

Exhibited are 19th century medical instruments used in diagnosing disease. Artifacts include early stethoscopes, blood pressure instruments, and X-ray tubes.

The Volunteer Program Beauty and Barber Salon offers hair care services and retail products to patients, visitors, and staff members. Services include haircuts, shampoo and styling, permanents, and hair coloring. Service and products can be purchases by cash/check, Mastercard/Visa, and staff members may use their staff charge. Gift certificates are available in the gift shop and beauty salon. By choosing to take advantage of this new and convenient service, you will be helping to sustain this valuable patient service.
