The Pain Clinic is run by the Department of Anesthesia. The main objective of the clinic is to provide pain management for patients with prolonged, treatment-resistant pain. It is not a diagnostic clinic.

Patients are seen at the Pain Clinic only after a complete medical evaluation has indicated that their pain problem cannot be helped by medical or surgical interventions.

The Pain Clinic offers no guarantees of complete pain relief but works with the patient to achieve these goals:

The Pain Clinic attempts to consider the effects of pain on the whole person. Nerve blocks, medication management, physical therapy, relaxation training, and counseling are services offered by the staff to assist the patient in a holistic approach to pain management.

Referrals to the Pain Clinic are taken from physicians in the state of Iowa as well as surrounding areas. The Pain Clinic presently is a part-time clinic.

Inpatients at University Hospitals are seen by the Pain Clinic physician and resident within 48 hours of referral.

Chairman, Department of Anesthesia
