Electric Lincoln Elementary

Parent Teacher Organization

6th Grade Class, Lincoln Elementary School

The participation of parent volunteers at Lincoln is unbelievable. They do volunteer work to raise money for our playground structure and many more needs. The volunteers work in our library, in the office helping teachers, they help in our publishing lab and help with fundraisers. Some of the PTO's money goes to paying for author visits, playground balls and equipment for the gym, ponchos for our Safety Patrol and books for the Media Center. Some is saved for future use. The money that the PTO raises during the year goes to activities and projects that benefit all students.

The Book Fair

by Charlie R.

The PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) has sponsored a Book Fair for many years. The Book Fair has always been well received by the parents and students of Lincoln. Each year more people have participated so each year more books have been sold.

This year the parents suggested that the PTO use a different Book Fair than in the past, so this year we will have two book fairs. The extra money earned will go toward completing the structure if the pledges fall short.

Lincoln has a Book Fair each year to supply new and challenging books for students to read at home. It brings families into Lincoln and from the books they purchase, the PTO receives a small project. The Book Fair encourages kids to READ, READ, READ!!!! The Lincoln Book Fair is open to all readers who love to read books.

The Chili Supper

by Mike C.

The Chili Supper and the Spaghetti Dinner took place in February during the last two years because of Lincoln's Birthday. They were organized by the PTO. The first year, all of the parent servers dressed up as Abe Linco ln to commemorate the special occasion. The PTO has sponsored the dinners to help raise money for the new playground structure. The dinners are delicious. Parents bring different drinks, a variety of cookies, relishes, and of course chili or spaghetti!

Fun Night

by Andy H.

Every year, Lincoln Elementary School has "Fun Night", a fund-raising event sponsored by the PTO. The PTO starts planning for the event three or four months in advance. "Fun Night" is a carnival like event with games like the hoop shoot, the ring toss, cake walk, putt putt golf, the silent auction and the football toss just to name a few. Each year the theme for the cake walk corresponds with the theme for the all school project.

Sixth graders always have an activity that they plan with the help of parents. The most popular projects are always the Haunted Houses which they create out of anything they can find! Families enjoy coming and playing the games together, eating pizza, cookies, brownies and other delicious items and entering the raffles and auctions.

Last year, the PTO raised $3,000 during Fun Night. The proceeds went toward paying the expenses for visiting authors, special classroom activities and all school project activies like Mr. Wizard. Fun Night is a profitable activity that is lots of fun for everyone.

The Lincoln Publishing Lab

by Andy H. and Danny S.

The Lincoln Publishing Lab is a publishing center at Lincoln where students bring stories which they have written and then publish it. After writing a story and taking it to final copy, the student meets with a parent to format their book. They get to choose what kind of cover they want, how they want their book to be typed, where they want pictures, who they want to dedicate their book to and what they would like to say about the author.

Parent volunteers then type the book and bind the book so it looks very professional. The book is then "published" by putting it in the Media Center. Each student puts a card in the card catalogue for their book and other students can check out their books.

When the year is over, they can take the book home or leave it in the library for another year. The books are great because you get to have one of your stories published and you get to read other kids' books, too.

Playground Structure

by Doug J.

The playground structure has been an idea for a long time and it is finally becoming real. Even though the structure cost about twenty thousand dollars, it is almost finished. Some of the fund-raisers for the structure were the chili supper and the spaghetti dinner. The PTO, student coun cil and the boy scouts also donated funds. The idea for the structure came from the students who wanted new playground equipment. The PTO and parents made the first move to get it built by forming a committee and organizing the fund-raisers.

To get everyone involved in the process, students made drawings of what they would like the structure to look like. Some students then made models of their ideas. Later in the year, a group of students worked together with an architect and designed the structure. In the future, there will be a dedication when the structure is completed.
