Electric Lincoln Elementary

All School Project

6th Grade Class, Lincoln Elementary School

One of the unique happenings at Lincoln School are the all school projects. Each year there is a different focus. We do all school projects so all grades can participate and work together, and so the whole school can focus on an enrichment activity for the year. Our first all school project was Balloon Day. More recent projects have included: Looking for Leo, Wrapped Up In Writing, Reach for the Stars and Math and Science: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

Balloon Day

by Jennie B.

In 1980-81, Lincoln had an all school project called Balloon Day. The goal of the project was to get the kids and their parents at our school to read more.

The kick-off was a big success. We had a hot air balloon lift off from the ravine. Then everyone went back inside the building and started reading. During the year, we read a lot of books and passed our goal tremendously. One day we had "character dress-up" day where we all ,dressed up as our favorite book character.

At the end of the year, we let off balloons with postcards tied to them. On the card was the name of our school, a description of what we were doing and a request to write back. We also sang a special song written by our music teacher, Mrs. Barrett. It was a wonderful activity for students, parents and teachers.

Wrapped Up In Writing

by Anna M.

"Wrapped Up In Writing" was an all school project that Lincoln did in the 1986-87 school year. In this all school project, students and teachers participated in and focused on writing. The purpose was to get people interested in writing and to show the process of a story from the rough draft the final draft. One of the activities we did for this all-school project was to really wrap the school in writing.

Looking For Leo

by Allison L.

In 1990, Lincoln School did the all school project, "Looking for Leo". Intermediate and primary homerooms were paired and were given a region of the United States to learn about. The focus was to learn more about the U.S. Throughout the year, we wrote to pen pals across the United States, cooked regional foods, read folk literature, historical fiction and fiction set in each region, studied about landmarks, and made comparisons between what life was like many years ago and what it is like now. Mrs. Wehrheim, our art teacher, also worked with kids to create "Jackie USA", a human-size sculpture made our of a collection of stuff from around the USA.

We had an event day when each paired homeroom did some activities about their region. For example, the Northeast make pretzels because the oldest pretzel factory is in Lititz, PA. The Southwest group made Mexican hot chocolate and had a fiesta. The Northwest celebrated the Washington state apple by dressing in red, playing apple games, making and drinking apple cider and doing apple art. Students in the Southeast region talked about Thomas Edison and did the "festival of lights" by having a parade of lights, making flowers and celebrating Edison's carnival with snow games and snow cones.

Reach For The Stars

by Jennie B.

"Reach for the Stars" was an all school project that Lincoln did from 1991-92. This all school project was to expose Lincoln students to a variety of fine arts so they could see and hear examples of the arts, learn about the process that artists use, to be aware and appreciate the fine arts and to have experiences to create their own works of art.

"Reach for the Stars" was about the five areas of dance, music, writing, drama and visual art. Artists, writers , dancers and people involved in music came and did workshops with students during the year.

The fourth, fifth and sixth graders were paired with a buddy from kindergarten, first, second or third grade. They did activities together during the year. The buddies brainstormed different fine arts activities and ways they enrich our lives. Then each buddy made a star and drew or wrote fine arts activities they enjoyed. We hung these from the ceiling. Also during the year, buddies did a writing activity where they took a newspaper article about a cat and a feather boa. They had to write the article from a different perspective than the original. This was a great all school project because it taught us all about a great variety of fine arts, gave kids a chance to try things they might not otherwise do and showed us all how much fun these things can be.

Science and Math: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

by Emily S.

"Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" is our all school project this year about math and science. It includes activities about math and science in the past, present and future. Our kick off was half hour workshops where students participated in experiments on light, energy, measurement, and other scientific concepts , and played math games .

The scientific demonstrations by Mr. Wizard were very interesting. He showed us concepts of science in a fun way. A favorite of the students was a homemade rocket created by Mr. Wizard and set off by a sixth grader.

Students also participated in a "See How It Works" day. With buddies or in small groups, we took apart machines to see what makes thing work.

Students are learning about the important components for a city so that they can design and build a futuristic city out of thousands and thousands of..............LEGOS!

Later this year, there will be a Health Fair where students will learn about how the human body works and a Family Math and Technology Night, where we will premiere this electronic book!
