An historical survey of human anatomic variation, including both ancient and current explanations for variation. This is a work in progress as only Chapter 1, on the muscles, is complete. Contents include: an alphabetical listing of muscles, with associated named or unnamed variations, illustrated with photographs of laboratory specimens, line drawings and historical illustrations; a list of muscle groupings; a glossary of terms; bibliographic citations to both current and historical sources.

Normal Radiologic Anatomy: X-Ray, CT, MRI and Ultrasound.

A multimedia textbook designed to help first-year medical students in identifying anatomic structures on radiological images. Each section of the body is represented, with examples of appropriate imaging modalities. Images are labeled to aid identification of structures. Each section concludes with a quiz.

The Human Brain: A Photographic Guide.

This anatomic atlas displays the essential anatomy of the human central nervous system. Photographs depict the actual structure of the brain and spinal cord and their immediate coverings. Most of the preparations appear unstained as the anatomist displays them in a series of dissections. Each photograph is accompanied by a labeled drawing and descriptive text to help the reader in interpreting the salient points. Includes a bibliography.

An Introduction to Basic Dermatology.

An introductory lecture given to medical students at the University of Iowa College of Medicine describing the morphologic categories of skin disease and the differential diagnoses which accompany them. Color photographs illustrate commonly-occurring skin conditions, captions identify the significant findings in each photograph.

Emergency Medicine Lectures.

A series of lectures given by University of Iowa College of Medicine faculty to residents entering service at University Hospitals. The lectures, presented in outline form, survey the common medical emergencies, including psychiatric emergencies, that residents are likely to encounter. University of Iowa Family Practice Handbook.

A clinical reference intended to survey all aspects of primary care medicine. Selected topics include emergency medicine, general surgery, psychiatry, AIDs and standard office procedures. Thirty case studies (also called patient simulations) excerpted from Pulmonary Embolus noted above. The case studies are illustrated with video clips, radiographs, ultrasound and CT scans, and include quizzes that incorporate the media.

The Top Ten Questions Asked About Lung Cancer.

A lecture that encompasses both the clinical presentation of a typical "index" case of lung cancer and the social implications of this disease. Questions patients are most likely to ask about their disease include chance of survival and how the disease was diagnosed. Transcribed from audiotape, the lecture includes questions from the audience.

Emporiatrics: An Introduction to Travel Medicine.

A guidebook for clinicians in the prevention and treatment of travel-related illnesses, including infectious diseases, altitude sickness, and other dangers to international travellers. An ongoing project of the UI Department of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases Division, this is a multimedia teaching file intended to illustrate the varieties of pulmonary disease. Each file contains presentation (including images), diagnosis, treatment, references, and questions based on the case.

Gastrogram.

A monthly publication for physicians and nursing staff regarding drugs used in the diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases, its purpose is to provide information on the latest developments in this area. Provides abstracts of clinical trials, includes references.

American Thoracic Society Unknown Cases.

A series of pulmonary case studies (also called patient simulations) prepared for the ATS Scientific Meeting, May 15, 1996. A short description of presentation is accompanied by imaging (radiographs, CT). Conference participants were invited to submit a diagnosis based on the case presentation via e-mail prior to the meeting, with results revealed at the conference. Subsequently developed into three Continuing Medical Education (CME) modules, with the availability of online tests.

Lung Tumors: A Multidisciplinary Database.

This multimedia textbook is a database designed to assist in the proper work-up of patients with undiagnosed chest masses. It is an outgrowth of the multidisciplinary approach to the care of lung cancer patients that is used at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. It provides case studies categorized by pathologic type, stages, and syndromes, as well as by the diagnostic and surgical procedures that were applied. Case studies provide history, lab results, and imaging used in the diagnosis.

Critical Care Nursing: Renal Outline.

A guide in outline form to the kidneys, intended for nurses. Renal anatomy and function are described, as well as the kidneys' relation to other organ systems. Renal failure, congenital defects and other pathologies are described along with treatment options.

Orthopaedics

Imaging of Muscle Injuries.

A multimedia textbook that reviews the anatomy and physiology of the muscle-tendon unit as they relate to indirect muscle injuries. Indirect muscle injuries are common in athletics and knowing the morphology and physiology of the muscle-tendon unit is key to the understanding of these injuries. Examples of common muscle injuries are illustrated; using MRI as well as radiographs improves diagnosis. Includes references.

Acute Low Back Problems in Adults.

A clinical practice guideline published by the Agency for Health Care Policy & Research (AHCPR), this guide provides information on the detection of the conditions that cause low back symptoms. It contains guidelines for taking a medical history, conducting a physical exam, and "red flags" and algorithms for interpreting results. Treatment options and strategies for pain management are considered.

Infectious Diseases of the Central Nervous System.

A multimedia tutorial designed to provide an overview of the various infectious disease processes which involve the central nervous system (CNS). The intent is to give relatively complete information about all of the important infectious diseases of the CNS without overwhelming detail. Infections of the CNS are divided into those which involve the meninges, and those which are confined primarily to the parenchyma. Atlas of Liver Pathology.

A multimedia textbook intended to survey all aspects of liver pathology when finished (chapters 3, 6, 8, 11 are completed). Includes chapters on normal liver anatomy and alcohol-related disease. Illustrated with pathology slides and photomicrographs.

Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and the Physician's Office Laboratory.

A Continuing Medical Education (CME) module designed at the University of Iowa Pathology Department as an aid to certifying clinical laboratory managers. The module contains the entire text of the CLIA, the federal regulations governing clinical laboratories, and provides online exams to test laboratory managers' understanding of and adherence to the regulations. Tests can be taken for practice or e-mailed to the University of Iowa for CME credit.

Pathology Manual: Gynecologic Oncology Group.

A histologic classification, in outline form, of epithelial disorders, both neoplastic and non-neoplastic, of the female genital tract. Emphasizes the specific cell types of carcinoma. The section on tumors of the ovary includes pathology slides. Each section includes references.

General Pediatric Clerkship Curriculum Resource Manual.

A joint project of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP), the Resource Manual is a companion volume to the GPCC proper. It consists of nineteen sections with strategies for implementing and evaluating a curriculum for medical students in general pediatrics, as well as strategies for teachers in such a program. Each section takes the form of an essay with references.

Pediatric Abdominal Mass Imaging.

UIHC On-line Reading Room Manual.

Intended for the use of house staff and department personnel, this manual is a guide to the patient care policies and procedures of the Radiology Department. It includes information for contacting Radiology staff, clinic hours, and the protocols for preparing patients for radiological procedures (preps). This manual is revised periodically as needed.

Iowa Radiology On-call Handbook.

Lectures given to first-year residents on the basics of diagnostic imaging. Topics include emergency ultrasound, gastrointestinal nuclear medicine, skull fractures and brain trauma, and facial anatomy and trauma. Each lecture consists of a series of image in the appropriate modality with accompanying text explaining how the diagnosis is made.

Introduction to Clinical Medicine: Radiology.

Four introductory lectures in radiology given to sophomore medical students at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. The four areas covered are chest, nuclear, skeletal and abdominal radiology.
